A health and fitness Artilce for Your ViewingCaffeine - I Bet You Didn't Know This! Health and Nutrition!
What exactly is caffeine? It is a colorless, somewhat bitter substance that is found in coffee, tea, chocolate and cola. It is also in many over- the-counter medicines and in many diet/weight loss supplements. It is a stimulant and it is considered a psychoactive drug. It is the most widely consumed drug in this country. Drugmakers are required by law to list the amount of caffeine in their product, however, food and beverage companies do not have to. The caffeine that is taken out of coffee beans to produce decaffeinated coffee is then sold to drug companies and soft drink manufacturers.
It can be a welcome waker-upper in the morning taken in that morning cup of coffee. It also helps give some a boost to stay awake late in the day. However, the boost isn't necessarily instant as it takes about an hour for the effects of caffeine to make it's way through the bloodstream and into the system. It has benefits and it has side effects. It helps keep us alert. It stimulates the central nervous system. Some say it improves physical and mental performance. It has diuretic activity. Some studies list is as a mood elevator, and a pain reliever. Because of the increased alertness levels of those who consume caffeine, there has been improved performance in activities such as test-taking, driving, flying and problem solving.
There are side effects of caffeine though. Those are insomnia, nervousness, increased tension and anxiety-panic attacks, just from drinking the amount of 300 mg. The amount that causes these side effects vary from individual to individual, however, children seem to have a lower tolerance of it because of their lower body weight. The Food and Drug Administration advises pregnant women to avoid it altogether. The FDA does list it as a "safe food additive", even though pregnant women should avoid it. For those that take it regularly every day, going without it a day can cause withdrawal symptoms such as, headaches, irritability, a lack of energy and of course, sleepiness. These withdrawal symptoms are short lived though.
The following is a chart and the amount of caffeine in products you use and consume daily.
6 ounce cup of coffee - 64mg to 150mg
5 ounce cup of tea- 40mg
12 ounce can of cola- 40mg
hot cocoa - 1 cup 4mg
6 ounce chocolate bar 25mg
2 Excedrin tablets 130mg
Besides weight loss products and stay awake products and energy drinks, caffeine is being tested for pesticide use and it has been laced in women's panty hose for it's constrictive effects that are supposed to shrink thighs. Love it or hate it, caffeine is and always has been a big part of American culture and probably is here to stay.

It is said that if you dont get a good stool to sit on, you wont enjoy the drink. By a good seat it means that not only it should be comfortable it should be attractive too besides having other minor and major specifications. Nowadays, there are lots and lots of options available, may be the number match to that of the number of the brands of beer available in the whole world. But the irony is that not many match all the required specifications. The options available in the material that we can use are metal, wood, bamboo, iron, etc. The styles available are retro, swivel, whether it has back or not, different metal colors, different designer fabrics, whether it is meant for indoors or outdoors and so on and so forth. We as the owner of our bar, we are the best judge of our bar and hence we are the only one who can decide, which is the best for ourselves. At times we want to make our own bar stools to cater our need. Here are some tips to make one yourself.
First of all you have to decide between the material and that in turn will also decide about the portability. Obviously the wood ones offer easy portability. Similarly if you think that children would be using that too often then bamboo ones would be better. You might also want to consider wood ones in that case. If you are an art lover and want to have some carvings and designs, then we would recommend you wood ones. If your house is of ethnic style then it is the wrought iron that will suit your need the most.
Then we think the height is the most important that you should consider. Although people have their own standards but it all depends on the height of the counter. Remember that calculating wrong seat heights is one of the most important reasons why people are unsatisfied with their stools. You should leave anywhere between 9 to 13 inches from the top of the seat to the counter.
The next is the style and color. If you want to choose from the innumerable designs or you want to give stress on comfort or you want something to write on the back then the swivel is the best for you. You can carve anything from the name of the basketball team you support to your wifes name. The color-coding will depend on the amount of light available in the bar and the color of your walls although black can suit every background.
Now let us talk about blend. The best among the blend is the wood and the metal. In this category some people make a metal frame with a wooden seat. In some others, the metal seat on the metal frame is carved and painted in such a way that it gives an impression of wooden seat, which means a durability of, wooden with a visual picture of wood.

Build Your Own Wine Rack (In An Afternoon)Pankaj andyA good drink is what even Gods enjoy and to most a good wine is the best drink in the world. The connoisseurs of wine say that to find out a good wine is to smell and taste it. Not is the case with the wine racks. It is much harder a task than that for you get to know the insulation, humidity and temperature that your wine needs besides the ambience that your wine drinker needs and lot other things.
Because of the specific requirements of the wines in terms of the humidity, etc the wine racks can be only few types in the texture although they may vary in terms of the design, the space they tae and the number of wine bottles they can hold.
For building your own wine rack the first thing that you should be sure of is that whether your walls have sufficient insulation otherwise you will lose nearly all of your good wine. A good insulation ranges from R11 to R19 depending the outer temperature, as basement cellars may need more insulation. After having an optimum insulation the next thing you should consider for building your own rack is the material. The options available are redwood, lattice, country pine and mahogany. Redwood offers a soothing look to the bar while the country pine allows an artistic environment. You can also have metal ones but they require extra care and not much can be offered in terms of designs.
For each bottle there should be a 4 to 6 inch breathing space that will help in not only easy accessibility but also for cleaning purposes. You shouldnt forget to keep the width of the rack at least 2 inch more than the length of the wine bottle although we advise around 15 inch for a single racking. There are many designs and most of them in different geometrical patterns but the best out of them is the rectangular one which is quite safe.
If you are thinking over some color, although it all depends upon the color of the walls and other surroundings, we recommend the dark ones. They give a more romantic and elegant look. Redwood and the mahogany generally do not need to be painted.
There are certain precautions that need to be considered. There should be no electrical installations where you are preparing to have your wine rack. The lighting system at the ceiling is called the can lighting and it should be around 15 inch from the wall for a single deep racking and around 28 to 30 inch for double deep racking. The doors and the windows of the bar should be properly installed so that they maintain insulation of inside from outside. The rack should not interfere with the door, window or any type of switch.
Besides the above ones there are certain racks called as counter top racks meant for a few bottles ranging from 1 to 12 and generally they are suited for a small gathering and are best kept on a table. Similarly there are certain racks which are rightly called hanging racks for they hang to the ceiling or the wall and they serve the purpose of both a show piece and a functional small rack.

Pesticides, Can we avoid them?anna maria volpiWhy, unfortunately, just washing vegetables is not enough to ensure produce clean enough for consumption
We all ingest lots of chemicals, one way or another. We breathe them, we drink them, and we eat them. The most troublesome are pesticides in produce. It makes me uncomfortable to think that while we are eating fruits and vegetables in reality we are also ingesting poisons that can accumulate in our bodies and make us very sick. This is food that supposes to be healthy and good for us!
Even if the most toxic chemicals have already been banned for use in agriculture, pesticides in general are poisons designed to kill insects, weed, small rodents and other pests. The long time effects of these poisons on people are not completely known. Even the minimal risk with these pollutants is too much, when we think we may expose children. We should try to do every effort to minimize our intake of these adverse chemicals.
Education is the key. Knowing which produce contain more pollutants can help us make the right choices, avoiding the most contaminated fruits and vegetables and eating the least polluted, or buy organic instead. In simulation of consumers eating habits has been demonstrated that changing a little bit the eating practices can lower considerably the ingestion of pesticides.
The results of an investigation on pesticides in produce by the USDA Pesticide Data Program, show that fruits topped the list of the consistently most contaminated produce, with eight of the 12 most polluted foods. The dirty dozen are: Apples, Bell Peppers, Celery, Cherries, Imported Grapes, Nectarines, Peaches, Pears, Potatoes, Red Raspberries, Spinach, and Strawberries.
You dont like broccoli? Too bad because they are among those least contaminated. In fact the 12 least polluted produce are: Asparagus, Avocados, Bananas, Broccoli, Cauliflower, Sweet Corn, Kiwi, Mangos, Onions, Papaya, Pineapples, and Sweet Peas.
Can washing of produce help get rid of pesticides? Not really. The fruits and vegetables tested by the USDA PDP are prepared emulating the practices of the average consumer before testing for pesticides. That is: (1) apples are washed with stems and cores removed; (2) asparagus and spinach have inedible portions removed and are washed; (3) cantaloupes are cut in half and seed and rinds are removed; [] and (9) tomatoes are washed and stems removed.
Washing before consuming is highly recommended because helps decrease the pesticide residues present on the surface of the vegetables, but the majorities of pollutants are absorbed into the plant and cant be just washed away. Some pesticides are specifically created to stick to the surface of the crops and they dont come out by washing. Peeling can help eliminating some of the chemicals but not all, and a lot of important substances will be discarded with the skin.
So, on one hand we have to eat plenty of fruit and vegetables for a healthy diet, and on the other hand we have to reduce as much a possible the intake of pesticides. What to do if you are unconvinced by the claims of the chemical companies that certain levels of pesticides are not dangerous?
We have very few options to defend ourselves: (1) Wash all vegetables and fruit very well; (2) Change eating habits in order to consume more of the produce with low pollutants; (3) Consume a diet as varied as possible; (4) Buy organic foods.
